The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI), working with the insurance industry and their representative body, Insurance Ireland, have created a new central insurance database, called the National Fleet Database (NFD), to enable fleet owners and motor trade policy holders to submit vehicle fleet information and ensure they are compliant with new Road Traffic and Road Bill (2021).

This central database is designed to help identify the insurance status of all vehicles and will be used by the MIBI, the Department of Transport and An Garda Síochána, as part of their role of enforcing insurance requirements in the Road Traffic Act.

The aim of this initiative is to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on Irish roads, which is estimated to be 8.3% of all vehicles in 2022.

Motor Fleet and Motor Trade policyholders are required to upload all vehicle registrations in advance of the 31st March 2023 deadline. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in a Class C fine of up to €2,500 on summary conviction in the District Court. In addition, An Garda Siochána will have the authority to seize the vehicle if it is uninsured.

As a fleet owner, you will be required to register your insurance policy details and vehicle fleet registrations with the National Fleet Database before the 31st March. To register, you will need a unique identification number provided by your broker or insurance company.

The MIBI website has useful documentation and short videos available in the help section to assist users. Please also see NFD User Guide and Q&A document, which is available on the MIBI website at the following link https://www.mibi.ie/about-us/imid.2054.html
