Your EV Range: What to Expect
Your EV’s official range comes from WLTP testing, but real‑world range varies with speed, weather, and driving style.
Achievable range will be impacted by speed, driving style, weather and a mix of city & motorway driving. Most drivers find around 80% of WLTP is a reliable everyday estimate.
Charging Made Simple
Home Charging
A home charger is the fastest and safest way to charge at home.
Using a home charger is a lot faster and safer. Pair it with a night-rate or smart tariff and schedule charging during discounted hours for maximum savings.
Public Charging
Two main types:
- Standard / Slow (3.7–22kW AC) located on-street, car parks, hotels
- Fast / High Power (50–350kW DC) located at service stations, motorways
Most chargers require an app or account. Watch for overstay fees, which vary by operator.
Charging Speed Depends On:
- Vehicle limits
- Battery temperature
- State of charge (faster when low)
- Natural slowdown as the battery fills

- ESB ecars
- EasyGo
- Ionity
- Plugsurfing
These help you find chargers, check availability, and manage sessions.
Charging Etiquette
- Charging bays are for actively charging only
- Return cables properly
- Don’t unplug other vehicles
- Report faults through the operator’s app
- If topping to 100% at a fast charger, consider switching to AC once SoC is high — freeing DC for others
Smart Ownership Tips
- Schedule charging and climate preconditioning
- Avoid letting the battery get very low before long trips
- Multiple short fast charges can be quicker than one long session
- Maintain tyre pressure for optimal range
- Heated seats/steering use less energy than full climate control
Maintenance
EVs need less maintenance than ICE vehicles, but still require:
- Washer fluid, brake fluid checks
- Tyre and wiper replacement
- Occasional brake cleaning (regen reduces wear)
Battery Care
General best practice includes:
Limiting battery State of Charge to 80% unless undertaking a lengthy journey, charging when low (<20%).” Avoid leaving the car at very low or very high charge for long periods. Lithium- ion batteries are an exception — they prefer regular 100% charges.
