The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI), working with the insurance industry and their representative body, Insurance Ireland, have created a central insurance database, called the National Fleet Database (NFD).

This central database is designed to help identify the insurance status of all vehicles and will be used by the MIBI, the Department of Transport and An Garda Síochána, as part of their role of enforcing insurance requirements in the Road Traffic Act.

The aim of this initiative is to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on Irish roads, which is estimated to be 8.3% of all vehicles in 2022.

It is the legal responsibility of the relevant fleet operator or manager to ensure compliance with National Fleet Database. Failure to upload vehicle registrations to the NFD by 30 November could result in legal sanctions.

To register, you will need a unique identification number provided by your broker or insurance company. Register here: https://nfd.mtpl.ie/
